howtofeedmypet.com is a small, independently run site with two feeding calculators — one for dogs, one for cats. It exists because most feeding guides start from the number on the scale and stop there, even though two animals at the same weight can need very different amounts of food depending on their body condition.

What's different here

Instead of asking you to already know your pet's "ideal weight," this calculator works it out from body condition score (BCS) — a standard veterinary assessment based on how a pet's ribs, waist, and abdomen look and feel. From there it estimates a resting energy requirement, applies an activity and life-stage adjustment, and subtracts any treats you feed.

The formulas, the sources behind them, and their limitations are shown on the calculator pages themselves — nothing here is meant to be a black box.
